Raising student achievement

The New Directions in Science Workbook contains all the elements necessary for students to achieve their best in NCEA Science.
  • Clear notes to help them learn
Students need clear, easy-to-read theory notes that summarise the main ideas. By purchasing the Workbook each student gets their own electronic copy of the New Directions in Science text book to study at home whenever they wish. The e-book can be used in class with a data projector, or students can use print copies that stay at school.

  • Electronic resources to make the knowlege stick
Homework is important if students are to retain overnight the knowledge gained in class. The computer exercises in the Workbook appeal to teenagers and are designed to help students learn the key ideas for each topic. Even five minutes per night will make a significant difference to their learning.

The photo and audio key facts files can reach some students who perhaps will not sit down at a computer, even for a few minutes a night. They're another mechanism to encourage students to review their work between lessons, and thus transfer that knowledge from short-term to long-term memory

  • Questions to teach the skills of writing quality answers
Students need lots of practice in answering exam style questions to do well in the external examinations. The questions in the New Directions in Science Workbook each focus on a small piece of the course and are designed for in-class or homework exercises while the topic is being taught.

Students also need experience in marking exercises using the A, M, E criteria they will meet in the examination. The New Directions in Science Workbook is the only Year 11 Science resource where all answers are fully-worked and accompanied by A, M, E judgement statements (except for those books composed solely of past NCEA examination papers).

  • Past examination papers for perfect practice
Nothing beats a real exam paper when you want to get good at passing real exams. The Workbook CD contains 3 years worth of real exam papers for students to train on. Because they'll have used the formative theory questions from the Workbook during the year, the questions in these papers will be new to them – just like the paper they'll sit at the end of the year.

Whether you're wanting to raise the number of students in your school who Achieve each standard, or you're looking to get a greater number of Merit or Excellence grades, the New Directions in Science Workbook is the resource to help you do it!

Electronic options

If you do not wish to have students purchase the printed Workbook, why not contact Pearsons about an electronic site license? Choose from a license for all the Workbook resources, or a low-cost license for just the interactive computer tasks and Quizzes. By uploading these tasks onto Moodle you can easily set homework activities and monitor students' work.
