New Directions in Science is a 320 page full-colour text book for Level 1 (Year 11) Science. It is suitable for students doing the NCEA Achievement standards for Level 1 Science or students doing a Unit Standards course.

Features of the text are:

  • The book is divided into the four strands of Level 1 Science, while chapter divisions within the strand correspond to the various Science Unit Standards. Each chapter is divided into a number of 2-page units. It is assumed that most units will cover a single lesson. As far as is practical, each unit is self-contained, allowing teachers to rearrange the material in whatever order suits them.

  • The text at the beginning of each double-page unit is in a larger font and has simpler language than elsewhere in the book.

  • The book contains many hundreds of high-quality, full-colour images. Each image had to 'earn its place', by making a positive contribution to the book.

  • Roughly one quarter of the book is made up of questions and fully-worked answers – that's over 1000 original questions!

  • All questions on each unit page can be answered from the two pages of the unit itself unless indicated.

  • The first question(s) for each unit cover the key points in that unit and can be used as summary notes.

  • Extension questions and 'Going deeper' sections provide material for the more able students.

  • Practice exam questions at the end of each major section of the book provide exam-style questions for both Unit Standard and Achievement Standard tests.

  • Dozens of 'So What' sections show how the principles taught in school apply in the real world.

  • Skills sections give plain-English instructions for important practical and theory skills.

  • The book begins with 109 Practicals. Each one includes an In your books section which helps students make a written record of their practical. Technician's notes for these practicals, and sample results and answers, can be found on the New Directions in Science Teachers' Guide CD.
