Active pdfs

An Active pdf contains form fields where there are write-on spaces in the printed document. This allows questions to be answered on-screen or in class with a data projector. The file also contains extra Comment and Markup Tools so the reader can highlight passages, add text boxes, complete diagrams and even ‘pin’ other files (including swf animations, powerpoints or web links) to the document.

Interactive exams

Interactive exams or practice questions contain form fields and the Comment and Markup Tools to allow the questions to be answered on-screen. In addition, the interactive files include code to reveal the model answers after the questions have been answered, and code to add up the student's scores and calculate their final grade.

Continuing Chemistry consists of a 226 page black and white printed book plus a CD containing a full-colour version of the printed book plus interactive revision tasks, PowerPoint files, Encounters files and NCEA exam papers.

Is it a Workbook or a text book or a revision book? Yes! Continuing Chemistry is simply a fantastic teaching resource.

Changes for the 2010 edition

  • Active pdfs
  • Interactive exams
  • Excellence/Scholarship questions
  • Flash cards of key facts for cell phones etc
  • Special ‘iPod-friendly’ PowerPoint and pdf files for students with iPod Touches or similar pdas.

Printed text

Features of the printed text are:

  • Clear, easy-to-read theory notes covering all essential aspects of Level 3 Chemistry.

  • Student learning objectives for each chapter.

  • Clear, step-wise worked examples guide students through common problems.

  • Formative Test yourself questions to develop understanding.

  • Exam-style Review questions at the end of each chapter. These questions are AMEd, with NCEA style judgement statements in the answer section.

  • Fully-worked answers to all questions. Showing full working for all calculations models correct setting out of calculations as well as making it easy for students to spot errors.

  • Wide margins provide space for extra notes (ideal for ESOL students).

  • Comprehensive 50-page write-on practical section means students won't lose their record of experimental work. This practical section is large enough to cover all essential reactions and techniques, while being small enough so that classes are able to do every practical and still have time for other activities.

  • Three tear-out Milestones sheets to assist students doing the Extended Practical.

  • A removable Key Facts booklet containing memory work for Level 3 Chemistry.

Electronic files

The student CD contains a full-colour Active pdf of the text with margin hot-links to rest of the CD contents. Explore how this material works together in this sample chapter.

Continuing Chemistry sample pages

Features of the CD are:

  • the Practical Answers file, giving sample results for each practical plus answers to all questions.

  • 152 revision tasks which provide a wide variety of interactive, on-screen revision activities to help students memorise the key facts and develop specific skills for Level 3 Chemistry. The instant feedback provided by these tasks encourages students to persevere with each activity. Trials have shown that even students reluctant to do written exercises will work through these on-screen activities.

  • 52 PowerPoint presentations, many using colour photographs to take students through essential reactions, allowing them to review each one many times. Some shows also include video of reactions. Additional PowerPoint presentations show animated step by step instructions for performing common chemical calculations.

  • The NZQA Level 3 Chemistry papers for 2005–2008 are included on the CD, in both Interactive and write-on form and including fully-worked answers and mark scheme. Relevant questions from the 2000–2003 Bursary papers have also been included in practice exam questions for each chapter. In total, there are 7 years worth of exam questions on this CD – many exam preparation books only provide 2 or 3 years' worth of papers!

  • A set of Excellence/Scholarship style questions is also included (in both Interactive and write-on form) to guide the most able students.
  • 18 Encounters with living, and historic chemists. Each one features some aspect of chemistry of relevance to the examination course, shows an application of this reaction or principle in everyday life, and also includes a biography of the chemist.

Teacher resources

Extra resources for teachers are located in the Teachers folder on the student CD.
  • A technician's guide listing all the chemicals and equipment required for each practical.

  • A technician's guide for the practicals demonstrated in the PowerPoint shows, giving teachers all the information needed to repeat these reactions in class either as demonstrations or student practicals.

  • A set of 101 Quizzes for classroom use. Most Quizzes parallel the computer Revision tasks, allowing teachers to set revision tasks for homework and then test them the next day in class. Others cover common calculation problems. Although the quizzes are included on the student CD, they are password protected. Teachers should contact their Pearson Rep to find out what the password is to open the Quiz file.

  • An editable Outline file, showing how all the material in Continuing Chemistry fits together. It is intended to help teachers to plan their course.

New resources for the electronic age

Flash cards

All the Key Facts, which appear in a pull-out booklet in the printed Workbook and form the basis of many of the computer activities and quizzes, are also available as individual jpg files, suitable for uploading onto a photo-capable cell phone, mp3 player, mini-photo frame or any other device capable of displaying photos. Students can thus revise their Chemistry whereever they go — or wait.

For iPods etc

An iPod Touch is capable of displaying PowerPoint and pdf files, within certain limitations. We have included ‘iPod-friendly’ files suitable for uploading to an iPod Touch or similar pda — plus instructions as to how to upload these files. How cool is that?
