Active pdfs

An Active pdf contains form fields where there are write-on spaces in the printed document. This allows questions to be answered on-screen or in class with a data projector. The file also contains extra Comment and Markup Tools to allow those using Adobe Reader to highlight passages, add text boxes, complete diagrams and even ‘pin’ other files (including swf animations, powerpoints or web links) to the document.

Interactive exams

Interactive exams contain form fields and the Comment and Markup Tools to allow the questions to be answered on-screen. Once the questions have been answered (either on-screen, or on paper), students mark their answers using simple tick boxes. Model answers and the conventional NZQA marking schedule for each question are also provided. Using this system students are able to quickly mark their practice papers and improve their skills at writing quality answers.

The Beginning Chemistry Workbook consists of a 280 page colour book plus a CD which includes an active PDF of the Workbook, 195 computer revision tasks, 64 PowerPoint files, 12 interactive NCEA exam papers and much more.

Printed text

Features of the printed text are:

  • Clear, easy-to-read theory notes covering all essential aspects of Level 2 Chemistry.

  • Clear, step-wise worked examples guide students through common problems.

  • Formative Test yourself questions to develop understanding.

  • Exam-style Review questions at the end of each chapter.

  • Fully-worked answers to all questions. Showing full working for all calculations models correct setting out of calculations as well as making it easy for students to spot errors. AME marking schedules are included for all Review questions.

  • Wide margins provide space for extra notes (ideal for ESOL students)

  • 46-page write-on practicals integrated with the theory notes and with model answers included in the answer section.

  • A removable Key Facts booklet containing memory work for Year 12 Chemistry.

Electronic files

The student CD contains a full-colour version of the text plus margin hot-links to rest of the CD contents.

Features of the CD are:

  • An active PDF of the printed Workbook, allowing teachers or students highlight passages, add margin notes, and to complete exercises onscreen, and to access the other CD resources through margin hot links.

  • A total of 64 PowerPoint shows provided as both pps shows that teachers can edit, and swf files embedded in the Workbook pdf file, allowing students to view the show alongside the notes..
    • 34 Practical shows, featuring hundreds of colour photographs which allow students to review every stage of the important practicals for this course.
    • 30 Worked Example shows, providing animated calculations with examples different from those in the printed text. They allow students to work through problems at their own pace.

  • Extracts from the Beginning Chemistry text book featuring biographies, stories, extension material, additional questions and their fully-worked answers.

  • Four practice papers for each of the three external standards, using questions from the 2007–2010 NZQA examinations. The papers are provided in both printable PDF files and as Interactive exams that can be completed on-screen if required, then marked using a series of tick boxes – allowing students to quickly mark their own practice papers without having to make sense of a complex marking schedule.

  • 195 revision tasks which provide interactive, on-screen revision activities to help students memorise the key facts and develop specific skills for Year 12 Chemistry. The instant feedback provided by these tasks encourages students to persevere with each activity. Trials have shown that even students reluctant to do written exercises will work through these on-screen activities.

  • Files for mobile learning:
    • 290 jpg Flash cards of the key facts, suitable for uploading onto a picture-capable cell phone, mp3 player, photoframe or pda for revision on the run.
    • Indexed swf files for Android devices which show all the animations and movies included in the PowerPoint shows.
    • iPod-friendly versions of the PowerPoint and pdf files, modified to work with the basic viewers supplied with an iPod Touch, iPhone or similar devices.
    • Tablet or Touch-friendly Revision files

  • Files for teachers:
    • An editable Map file to make planning easy.
    • A technician's guide with notes and chemicals/equipment lists for all Workbook practicals
    • 109 Quizzes for classroom use in a password-protected file for teachers. Many quizzes parallel the revision tasks, while others give practice in common calculations.
    • The Practicals file from the 2004 Beginning Chemistry Teachers' Guide containing 62 Additional Practicals – some for teacher demonstrations, and most suitable for students.
